The 2025 GCSE performance results for Somerset’s state secondary schools have been released, offering a clear picture of how local schools fared this year. Our interactive tool allows you to explore detailed performance data for schools across the county.

The Department for Education published the nationwide GCSE results for the 2024/25 academic year yesterday, just weeks before parents in Kent face the deadline to apply for Year 7 places in September 2026.

In Somerset, 15 schools saw the majority of their pupils achieve grade 5 or above in both Maths and English GCSEs — the key benchmark used to assess school performance.

This year’s league tables evaluate schools based on three main Key Stage 4 metrics: the percentage of pupils achieving GCSE Grade 5 or above in English and Maths, the percentage achieving Grade 5 or above in the English Baccalaureate, and the average attainment score of pupils.

However, the Progress 8 score — which measures how much progress pupils make between ages 11 and 16 — is absent this year due to the lack of baseline Key Stage 2 assessment data caused by COVID-19 disruptions. This means the added value schools provide to pupil progress cannot be assessed for the 2024/25 academic year, nor for next year.

Across England, Wilson’s School in Wallington, Sutton, tops the GCSE results with 100% of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and Maths. It is also the only school to have 100% of pupils pass the English Baccalaureate at grade 5 or above.

Nationwide, GCSE results have improved slightly for the second consecutive year, with the Grade 5 pass rate rising to 55% from 54.6% last year and up from 53.5% pre-pandemic. However, the pass rate specifically for English and Maths dipped slightly.

The proportion of top grades (7 to 9) also increased by nearly two percentage points in 2025. Regional disparities persist, with just 17.8% of GCSEs graded 7 or above in the North East, compared to 28.4% in London.

The release of this data is timely for Somerset families with children in their final year of primary school as many councils set October 31 as the deadline to apply for Year 7 places starting September 2026.
