Somerset’s Taunton Brewhouse Theatre to Close Indefinitely

Taunton Brewhouse, a prominent theatre in Somerset’s county town, has announced it will close indefinitely as the charitable company that operates it is to cease trading by the end of October 2026. Despite an appeal for public donations, the financial support received was insufficient to secure the theatre’s future.

The venue, which has operated as a key cultural and community space in Taunton for 13 years, is owned by Somerset Council. The council withdrew its subsidy for the theatre last year, although Taunton Town Council continues to provide an annual funding support of £105,000.

The closure decision comes amid rising operational costs, increased responsibility for building maintenance, reduced funding, and lower ticket sales. The trustees of Taunton Theatre Association Ltd (TTA) expressed deep regret but confirmed that all events scheduled for October 2026 will go ahead as planned. Tickets remain available for these final performances, with the public encouraged to book online.

Chair of trustees Val Hammond reflected on the difficult decision, emphasising pride in what the association has achieved and gratitude towards staff, volunteers, donors, and partners. She expressed hope that a new operator will emerge to reopen the theatre, highlighting the venue’s importance to the community. “It is inconceivable that Taunton should be without a public theatre,” she said.

A spokesperson noted that although some generous donations and pledges were made following the public appeal in September 2026, the regulatory and organisational challenges prevented the development of a viable survival plan within the available timeframe.

The town council has acknowledged the closure with sadness and indicated it will do all it can to find a sustainable solution to reopen the theatre. A spokesperson stated this will have significant consequences for the town if no future operator is secured.

For those holding tickets for events from 1 November 2026 onwards, the theatre recommends retaining booking confirmations and evidence of payment. Further information on claim processes for ticket holders will be communicated in due course.

In 2024, Somerset Council signed a new 50-year lease with the TTA but confirmed it would cease all subsidy by April 2025. At the time, the venue was recognised as a valuable destination for Taunton by local officials. The current closure marks a significant loss for the town’s cultural scene as the search begins for a new way forward to restore this key community venue.
