Children across Somerset are being encouraged to dive into the world of stories and nature as the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge kicks off in local libraries.
Now in its 26th year, the challenge invites children aged four to eleven to read six books over the summer holidays. Participants earn rewards along the way and receive a medal upon completion. The 2025 theme, Story Garden: Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, beautifully blends the joy of reading with the magic of the natural world, illustrated by acclaimed artist Dapo Adeola.
Supported by Somerset Council and coordinated by the national charity The Reading Agency, this free programme aims to sustain children’s reading habits during the summer break and foster a lifelong love for books. It is available at all participating public libraries across Somerset.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s lead member for communities, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage children to embrace reading and discover how books can entertain and inspire. Libraries across Somerset will host free activity packs, nature-themed events, and specially selected books designed to ignite curiosity and creativity.”
Karen Napier, chief executive of The Reading Agency, added: “The Summer Reading Challenge continues to shine as a beacon in supporting children’s reading. Story Garden will create enchanting spaces where children can explore and be curious, merging the joys of reading with the proven wellbeing benefits of connecting with nature.”
In 2024, the challenge engaged nearly 600,000 children nationally and led to over 100,000 new library memberships, highlighting its significant impact on young readers.
