Somerset’s natural beauty is once again captivating audiences, featured prominently in the new Swedish psychological thriller, Unmoored. Filmed largely across Exmoor’s striking landscapes, the movie will be available on major streaming platforms from mid-September, with select local cinema screenings expected from mid-August.
Unmoored is adapted from The Living and Dead in Winsford, a novel penned by award-winning Swedish crime writer Håkan Nesser during his extended stay in Exmoor National Park. The story follows Maria Holinek, a renowned Swedish TV presenter who escapes the turmoil of Stockholm with her loyal dog, Castor, seeking solace in the wilds of Exmoor after scandal strikes her family.
The production embraced the natural allure of Exmoor, shooting in picturesque locations including Simonsbath, the Barle Valley, the Exmoor Forest Inn, Exford, Minehead, and Wiveliscombe. Producer Naomi Despres praised the region’s cinematic appeal: “Filming in Exmoor was a dream come true. Despite logistical challenges, the magical scenery rewarded us beyond expectations.”

Director Caroline Ingvarsson echoed this sentiment, expressing eagerness to return: “We all fell in love with Exmoor and look forward to creating more films here.”
The county’s film office, Screen Somerset, promotes such productions recognizing the considerable economic impact, with film and TV spending surpassing £4 million last year. In partnership with Visit Exmoor and Visit Somerset, Screen Somerset also supports screen tourism—encouraging visitors to explore the landscapes they have seen on screen.
Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development, highlighted the benefits: “Filming boosts local businesses and showcases Somerset as a filming hotspot. A film like Unmoored is a wonderful shop window for our region.”
The film will be available on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV from Monday, 15 September. Local cinema screenings may begin from Thursday, 15 August; for updates, visit https://bulldog-film.com/films/unmoored/.
Emma Thomasson, Chief Executive of Visit Exmoor, emphasized the event’s significance: “Unmoored beautifully captures the spirit of Exmoor, supporting rural communities and drawing new visitors inspired by the film’s vivid portrayal of our landscape.”
Dan James, Enterprise and Communications Manager at Exmoor National Park Authority, added, “Unmoored highlights the wild beauty and unique character of Exmoor, reaffirming its inspirational power for artists and audiences worldwide.”
