At Headingley, chasing 162 against Yorkshire, Overton blasted a career-best 78 not out off just 29 balls, smashing eight fours and five sixes to snatch a two-wicket victory from the jaws of defeat.
Somerset’s hopes had dimmed significantly at 82 for eight in the 15th over, but Overton’s explosive innings recalibrated the game — he smashed 22 runs off the final over bowled by Matthew Revis to seal the win with a ball to spare. Overton also contributed with the ball, taking two vital wickets that helped restrict Yorkshire to 161 for nine. Fellow seamer Jake Ball supported well, grabbing three wickets for 30 runs.
Reflecting on his performance, Overton said, “I’ve batted well this year, but I’ve never hit like that under pressure. That six first ball in the last over was huge — when I followed it with another six, I felt, ‘Yeah, we’ve got a chance.’ Staying calm and backing my technique was key.”

Despite Yorkshire’s promising start, led by Adam Lyth who top-scored with 64, the hosts found themselves under pressure after losing early wickets. Moeen Ali’s promotion to opener backfired with a golden duck, and successive breakthroughs from Somerset bowlers kept Yorkshire’s innings in check.
Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath expressed his disappointment but praised Somerset’s resilience: “When you have a side 80-8, you think the game is done. Credit to Somerset — they’re champions for a reason. It was one of those rare innings that just turned the game.”
