Cheddar Reservoir, a beloved Somerset landmark known for its tranquil scenery and rich wildlife, has introduced an exhilarating new watersport that’s capturing the attention of adventure enthusiasts. As one of the region’s pioneering inland venues, Cheddar Reservoir now offers wing foiling, a dynamic sport that combines elements of kitesurfing and windsurfing.
The reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Bristol and nearby areas, provides the perfect setting for wing foiling thanks to its flat, wave-free waters. However, due to the recent summer heatwaves, water levels have dropped and the activity will resume once the reservoir refills, expected sometime between late September and early October.
Wing foiling involves standing on a board while holding a handheld wing to maneuver across the water’s surface, delivering an exhilarating yet accessible experience for both beginners and intermediates. Cheddar Watersports, operated by the Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club, manages lessons and equipment rentals at the site. Their team of qualified instructors run sessions seven days a week during peak seasons, emphasizing safety and skill development.

Kirsty Dunford, Conservation, Access, and Recreations Manager at Bristol Water, expressed enthusiasm about the sport’s growing popularity: “It’s fantastic to see people embracing this exciting new activity at Cheddar Reservoir. It’s both thrilling for participants and enjoyable for those watching from the shoreline.”
The reservoir’s offerings don’t stop at wing foiling. Visitors can also enjoy sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. While watersports flourish, swimming remains prohibited due to safety concerns, with occasional public access restrictions during hot spells to ensure compliance.
For those who prefer land-based enjoyment, Cheddar Reservoir boasts a scenic 2.5-mile circular walking route surrounded by stunning views of the Mendip Hills. The area includes free parking and a playground, making it ideal for strolls, running, or peaceful birdwatching. However, visitors should note there are no toilets or cafes on site, and for families seeking full amenities, nearby Chew Valley Lake may be preferable.
One visitor shared on TripAdvisor, “Gentle strolls in peaceful surroundings… beautiful views of the Mendips, plenty of wildlife, and a haven for walkers and dog owners alike.”
Whether you’re seeking adventure on the water or a serene walk amidst nature, Cheddar Reservoir offers a remarkable escape infused with natural beauty and new thrills.
