The Strawberry Line, a cherished rural cycle and walking path in Somerset, is in the running to be named Britain’s favourite path in a nationwide public vote. Stretching uninterrupted from Yatton railway station to Labourham Way in Cheddar, the route is set to eventually extend all the way to Collett Park in Shepton Mallet.
The Strawberry Line Society, in partnership with Somerset Council and local landowners, has been actively working to complete the remaining sections of this scenic trail. Earlier this year, Somerset Council announced a £730,000 investment aimed at enhancing the Strawberry Line alongside other rural routes over the next two years.
In addition, the Mendip Hills National Landscape management team contributed £30,000 in June for smaller-scale improvements, further supporting the path’s development and preservation.

Now, trail users and local supporters have just weeks left to cast their vote for the Strawberry Line in The Ramblers’ Association’s competition to crown Britain’s favourite path. The Ramblers, a registered charity dedicated to improving countryside access, selected the Strawberry Line as the sole finalist from the South West region. It will compete against iconic routes such as Scotland’s West Highland Way, the Holy Island Causeway near Lindisfarne, and Pinnacle Hill in the Malvern Hills.
Amanda Jane Baldwin, a local resident from Winscombe who nominated the path, praises it as “stunning.” She shared, “Since moving here over seven years ago, I have walked this path countless times. It is accessible year-round, stretches for miles, and is a genuine pleasure to walk. The natural beauty surrounding the trail is inspiring. What makes it even more special is that it is maintained by volunteers.”
Voting is open until 11 pm on July 31, with participants allowed to vote multiple times, limited to one vote per unique email address.
Looking ahead, plans for the next 18 months include numerous enhancements to the Strawberry Line. Discussions with local landowners and the Historic Railways Estate continue to close remaining gaps along the trail. One notable upcoming upgrade will improve the existing crossing over the A38 at Shute Shelve near Axbridge, coinciding with a broader £30 million road improvement project aimed at reducing travel time between M5 Junction 22 and Bristol Airport.
The Strawberry Line exemplifies community spirit and countryside enjoyment, making it a strong contender for Britain’s favourite path.
