The Strawberry Line, a beloved rural cycle and walking route in Somerset, is in the running to be crowned Britain’s favourite path in a nationwide public vote. Stretching from Yatton railway station to Labourham Way in Cheddar, the route is set to extend further to Collett Park in Shepton Mallet, enhancing connectivity across the region.
This multi-user trail has been championed by the Strawberry Line Society, collaborating closely with Somerset Council and local landowners to complete the remaining sections. In April, Somerset Council pledged £730,000 towards this and other rural routes over the next two years, underscoring the commitment to improving outdoor access. Additionally, the Mendip Hills National Landscape management team allocated £30,000 in June for smaller-scale enhancements along the path.
Voters now have just weeks to support the Strawberry Line in The Ramblers’ Association competition, which celebrates the UK’s finest pathways. The route is the sole finalist from the entire South West, contending with iconic paths such as Scotland’s West Highland Way, Northumberland’s Holy Island Causeway, and Worcestershire’s Pinnacle Hill.

Local resident Amanda Jane Baldwin of Winscombe, who nominated the path, praises the Strawberry Line as “stunning” and “an absolute pleasure to walk on." She highlights its accessibility in all weather conditions, scenic views, and the dedication of volunteers who maintain the trail, making it even more special.
Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to cast their votes before 11pm on July 31, with each email address permitted one vote. Multiple votes per person are allowed if using different email addresses.
Looking ahead, further improvements are planned over the next 18 months, including finalizing agreements with landowners and the Historic Railways Estate to close remaining gaps. Upgrades are also expected at the A38 Shute Shelve crossing near Axbridge, which forms part of a larger £30 million road improvement program aimed at easing travel between the M5 motorway and Bristol Airport.
The Strawberry Line stands as a testament to community effort and Somerset’s commitment to preserving and enhancing outdoor spaces for all to enjoy.
