Somerset’s roads have drawn a colourful comparison to Joseph’s legendary “coat of many colours,” thanks to a remark from Conservative Councillor Alan Bradford.
At a recent public meeting, Bradford, representing North Petherton, commended Somerset Council’s highways team for the impressive quality of some recent road repairs. The council has been busy this season, tackling everything from extensive resurfacing projects to fixing hundreds of potholes, all intensified by the warmer weather.
However, Bradford also expressed frustration that these improvements aren’t consistent across the county’s entire road network. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of Somerset Council’s climate, environment and place scrutiny committee in Taunton, he likened the patchwork repairs to the patchwork coat from the beloved musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

He said, “Some of the highways team’s work on road surfaces is tremendous – credit where it’s due. We get a lot of questions and concerns about what’s happening with our roads. It feels like some areas are receiving top-quality repairs, while others are left patched up. When you see this mix, it’s like a coat of many colours – patch after patch after patch.”
The comparison refers to the musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, which tells the story of Joseph from the Bible, centered around his vivid, multicoloured coat. Since its 1974 debut, the show has become a favourite worldwide.
Bradford called for a more consistent approach, saying, “I believe common sense should prevail. Instead of patching here and there, the repairs should cover entire stretches. It’s a difficult challenge, but what’s been done so far has been done very well.”
In essence, while Somerset’s highways team has earned plaudits for their efforts, there is a clear demand from local representatives and residents for a more uniform standard across all roads in the county.
