Somerset’s Own ‘Cool Runnings’ Star: From School Ski Trip to Olympic Dream

Jens Hullah’s remarkable journey to the world of bobsleigh began humbly on a school trip to Mendip Activity Centre’s dry ski slope. Now based in Shipham, Somerset, Jens is on the fast track towards representing Great Britain at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games as part of Team GB’s bobsleigh squad.

Born in Bristol, Jens made a bold switch from rowing to bobsleigh in the summer of 2023. Despite the late transition, he reached the top level within just two months—proof of his natural athleticism and dedication. His initial exposure to snowsports at Churchill Secondary School in North Somerset ignited a passion for thrilling outdoor pursuits, propelling him from local slopes to the global stage.

Jens made his World Cup debut in the four-man bobsleigh event in Lillehammer, quickly followed by a two-man race in Sigulda, finishing 17th alongside pilot Adam Baird in both competitions. His impressive rookie season earned him spots in the prestigious World Championships in Winterberg in early 2024, where he achieved 23rd in the two-man event with John Stanbridge and 18th in the four-man with Baird.

Closing out the year, Jens secured a 14th place finish in Lake Placid’s four-man event, marking his third World Cup appearance—in three different venues across two continents. Prior to his bobsleigh career, Jens was a decorated rower for nine years. His accolades include multiple medals for Great Britain at U18 and U23 European Championships, four British Championship titles, British Universities and Concept 2 records, and victories at the Henley Royal Regatta.

“I’m very patriotic,” Jens reflects. “Watching London 2012 at age 12 inspired me to pursue elite sport. Rowing came first, then bobsleigh. Now I’m living that dream.”

As the 2024 and 2025 World Cup seasons unfold, Jens continues to impress, with his four-man team competing in the Europa Cup, eagerly awaiting confirmation of Olympic selection. GB has already qualified two men’s bobsleigh teams for the 2026 Winter Games in both the two-man and four-man events. The teams train out of the University of Bath, elevating Britain’s presence on the ice track.

David Eddins, CEO of Mendip Adventure, expressed pride in Jens’ achievements. “Jens’ story showcases how a passion sparked on our dry ski slope can lead to competing—and excelling—at the highest international level.”
