In England and Wales, the boy’s name Muhammad leads the charts, given to 5,721 newborn boys last year. Close behind are Noah, with 4,139 babies named, and Oliver at third with 3,492.
For girls, Olivia continues its reign as the most popular name, holding the top spot since 2016. In 2024, 2,761 baby girls were named Olivia. Following Olivia are Amelia with 2,448, Lily with 2,185, and Isla with 2,056.
In Somerset specifically, the most favored boys’ names are Charlie, William, Harry, and Oliver. The top girls’ names in the region are Isla, Emily, Olivia, and Amelia.

Name popularity varies significantly across the country. Muhammad ranks highest in the North West, Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, and London. Oliver is the favorite in the North East, Noah in the East of England and Wales, Arthur in the South East and South West.
Among girls, Olivia dominates most regions including the North East, North West, East and West Midlands, London, South East, South West, and Wales. Yorkshire is the exception, where Amelia holds the top spot.
