Notts Outlaws began their Metro Bank One-Day Cup journey with a commanding four-wicket win over Somerset, driven by impressive half-centuries from captain Haseeb Hameed (66 off 79) and Freddie McCann, who notched a List A career-best 70 off 82 balls. Chasing Somerset’s total of 258 for nine, Notts reached 259 for six with 32 balls remaining at the John Fretwell Sports Complex, home to Welbeck Cricket Club.
Somerset, semi-finalists in 2025, started positively but quickly lost a wicket as Brett Hutton took Archie Vaughan for just five deliveries. The innings looked set for a total over 300 when they stood at 160 for two after 35 overs. However, a collapse saw them lose their last six wickets for just 27 runs, with Notts’ Migael Pretorius taking four for 41. Tom Lammonby, who impressed last year with two hundreds in the competition, led Somerset’s scoring with a patient 92 off 109 balls, while debutant Savin Perera contributed a confident 58 off 84. Despite their combined efforts and a 102-run partnership, Somerset fell short, with Joe Pocklington’s three wickets for 28 playing a crucial role for Notts.
Perera, though a newcomer to senior cricket at 27, brought experience from Second XI stints with 10 counties, including Nottinghamshire, and multiple centuries at that level and for the South Asian Cricket Academy. His fluent off-side drives with eight boundaries were a highlight until McCann removed him with a sharp catch. Lammonby built steadily before attempting to accelerate but fell just short of a century, caught on a pull shot. Somerset’s middle and lower order, including Josh Thomas, Johnny Connell (who scored 24 from 24 on his debut), and Kian Roberts, struggled to raise the tempo, while Pocklington consistently struck key blows, including dismissing Pretorius and Jack Leach.

In response, Notts were steady at 61 for one after 10 overs, but wickets fell intermittently. Ben Slater scored a brisk 25 from 18 but was caught off Jake Ball, Somerset’s captain. McCann shone with aggressive stroke play before falling to a short delivery from Pretorius, who then triggered a minor collapse by dismissing Kyle Verreynne, Hameed, and Pocklington in quick succession. However, Lyndon James’s composed innings, backed by solid fielding and bowling efforts, helped guide Notts home with a series of crucial boundaries.
Reflecting on the match, McCann said: “It’s great to start the season strong, especially at home. The end got tense, but Lyndon’s performance under pressure was outstanding. The bowling unit, particularly Joe Pocklington, held firm when Somerset looked set for a big total. We felt 258 was chaseable, given the fast outfield and support from bowlers like Brett Hutton and James Hayes.”
Somerset’s Jake Ball expressed mixed feelings: “We fell a bit short with the bat. A few more runs could have put added pressure on them towards the end. Still, I’m proud of the bowlers, especially Migael’s four wickets. Captaining my former club was special. We have new players settling in, and with some tightening and teamwork, we believe we can compete strongly throughout the tournament.”
