North Somerset Council has submitted an exciting planning application aimed at transforming Marine Lake, a cherished outdoor water attraction in Weston-super-Mare. The proposals, crafted by the council’s appointed architectural firm We Made That, focus on extensive improvements designed to enhance the visitor experience and promote year-round activity.
Developed through extensive consultation with local residents, community groups, and organizations, the plans reflect the community’s vision for the site. This redevelopment is a key part of North Somerset Council’s broader placemaking initiative, funded in part by a successful £20 million government grant.
While the Cove building overlooking Marine Lake, which currently houses the RNLI shop and visitor centre, will remain unchanged, new facilities are planned to expand leisure options. These upgrades include creating family-friendly spaces, boosting dining and leisure amenities, and enhancing water-based activities, making the lake a vibrant hub for people of all ages.

Cllr Mike Solomon, executive member responsible for seafronts, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “Our goal is to develop Marine Lake into a year-round destination that supports food, drink, and leisure opportunities in a safe and welcoming environment. The community’s involvement has been invaluable, and we look forward to the positive impact these proposals will have on Weston’s seafront.”
With community engagement at the heart of the initiative, more than 120 locals participated in last summer’s Grove Park Gathering event. Volunteers from the Weston Marine Lake Mudlarks continue to play a vital role in managing the lake and supporting redevelopment efforts. The council invites everyone to review the plans and share their feedback via the planning portal.
