Somerset’s Marine Lake Set for Major Transformation in Weston-super-Mare

North Somerset Council has submitted an ambitious proposal to revamp Marine Lake, a popular outdoor water attraction in Weston-super-Mare. The planning application, prepared by the council’s architecture partner We Made That, outlines a range of improvements aimed at enhancing the site’s appeal and usability.

These designs have been carefully developed with input from local residents, community groups, and organizations, reflecting a collaborative vision for the future of the lake. This initiative is a key part of North Somerset Council’s broader placemaking strategy to breathe new life into the town, supported by a substantial £20 million grant secured from the UK government.

While the Cove building, which overlooks Marine Lake and currently houses the RNLI shop and visitor centre, will remain unchanged, the rest of the area is slated for transformation. The council intends to expand year-round facilities focused on food, drink, and leisure activities, creating a safe and engaging environment for families and visitors of all ages.

Cllr Mike Solomon, executive member responsible for seafronts, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “Our vision is to enhance Marine Lake into a vibrant, family-friendly destination offering a wide range of water-based activities. We’re thrilled to submit these proposals for planning approval and hopeful that, once completed, the improvements will positively impact this cherished seafront location.”

Community involvement has been central to the project, with over 120 attendees at last summer’s Grove Park Gathering event and ongoing engagement with the volunteer group Weston Marine Lake Mudlarks, who help manage the lake. The council encourages residents to review the proposals and provide feedback through the official planning portal.
