Motorway service stations are rarely regarded as destinations for exceptional food. Typically, they’re quick pit stops—grab a coffee, a snack, and move on. But the Sedgemoor Services on the southbound M5 in Somerset is rewriting that story.
Roadchef has introduced the Sedgemoor Farm Shop, a unique concept showcasing the finest local produce and artisanal craftsmanship. This isn’t just a place to refuel your car; it’s a celebration of Somerset’s rich culinary heritage.
“This isn’t about national brands. It’s our own, tailored to showcase Somerset,” explains Kevin Whitehouse, Roadchef’s retail, procurement and supply chain director. Partnering with over 60 local and regional producers, the farm shop offers everything from handcrafted honey and freshly baked goods to specialty coffees and artisan gelato.

The location was deliberately chosen due to its proximity to popular tourist routes headed to Devon and Cornwall. “People speed through beautiful countryside every day without stopping. Our farm shop gives them a chance to truly taste Somerset.” Kevin adds that the shop delivers not just products but an experience—encouraging travelers to linger, appreciate, and connect with local makers.
A standout supplier is Swoon Gelato, a Bristol-based company crafting small-batch authentic Italian gelato. Sales manager Deborah Hawkins highlights their artisanal approach: “Our gelato is made with real love and care, using a consultant trained at the Carpigiani School of Gelato.” Fragrant pistachio, rich Amarena cherry cheesecake, and salted caramel are among the top flavors delighting visitors.
Local drink producers like Bradley’s Juice embody Somerset’s apple-growing tradition. Founder Miles Bradley crafts natural juices with minimal ingredients, such as his signature apple juice sourced from orchards just 10 miles away. “We keep it simple,” Miles states. “No artificial flavors, just what nature provides.”
Willow and Finch, born from a school project in Exeter, offers award-winning cookies and brownies made without palm oil, using local free-range eggs and ethical ingredients. Founder Elodie Buckley’s passion shines in every bite, with their white chocolate and raspberry brownie earning a Taste of the West Gold Award.
Beau’s Bakehouse, an artisan bakery from near Gloucester, combines passion with craftsmanship. Founder Jacqui Smith shares, “Every cake is hand-packed and made with love.” Their moist carrot cake and traditional shortbread have found fans nationwide, drawing praise far beyond Somerset’s borders.
The Sedgemoor Farm Shop is more than a retail space; it’s a platform elevating local producers and bringing their stories to a wider audience. Roadchef’s vision is clear: “We want to turn motorway necessity into an experience, and support a sustainable future by promoting local, quality food.”
For travelers passing through Somerset, the farm shop offers more than convenience—it invites discovery, indulgence, and connection with the heart of the region’s food culture. Whether savoring a baked Scotch egg, sampling luscious gelato, or picking up a bottle of freshly pressed apple juice, visitors leave with a taste of Somerset’s finest.
