Somerset’s Jenny Agutter Unrecognisable in Charming Throwback Photo Amid Call the Midwife Finale

Jenny Agutter, beloved for her role as Sister Julienne in the long-running BBC period drama Call the Midwife, has shared a throwback photo that leaves fans pleasantly surprised by how different she looks compared to her on-screen character.

At 73, the Somerset-born actress has been a central figure of the series since it first aired in 2012, portraying Sister Julienne, the compassionate Sister-in-Charge of Nonnatus House. Over the years, her character has become a symbol of grace and resilience, guiding the nursing order through the evolving social landscape.

This season has been notably intense, with the storyline delving into the challenges of transitioning Nonnatus House into the 1970s. Sister Julienne faces mounting pressure as the council insists on replacing traditional habits with uniforms and navigates harrowing events such as a baby abduction in episode four. Her leadership is crucial in shaping the future of the order’s missionary work.

As the eagerly awaited series finale approaches, an old photograph of Jenny Agutter surfaced on the Instagram page “Jenny Agutter News,” delighting fans and sparking nostalgia. In the photo, Jenny sports brunette shoulder-length hair, wearing a peach vest underneath a white caftan with floral designs, paired with a flowing white skirt—an ensemble far removed from her nun’s habit.

Fans took to the comments to express their admiration and amusement. One playfully remarked, “Oh Sister Julienne, what would the mother house say?” while another simply wrote, “What a lovely picture.” The daughter added, “Ravishing and you still are very beautiful.”

The photo was shared just days before the March 8 airing of Call the Midwife’s current season finale. However, fans will be disappointed to learn that the series will take a hiatus after this season, with no annual Christmas special scheduled for later this year.

Show creator Heidi Thomas explained to Radio Times that after producing 15 series in as many years, the lengthy production process and need for set refurbishments have necessitated a break. “The sets need repair. The nuns’ habits are worn out. It takes 14 months to make every series,” she said.

Looking ahead, Series 16 promises to bring significant changes, including the replacement of Nonnatus House with a community hospital setting. During this break, a prequel spin-off set in the 1940s is also in development, along with a feature film set in 1972 that will reunite the beloved cast.

The untitled prequel is expected to include appearances from enduring characters such as Sister Julienne, Sister Monica Joan, and the late Sister Evangeline, offering fans a fresh glimpse into the origins of the story.

Fans of the show can catch the final episode of Call the Midwife Series 15 on Sunday, March 8 at 8 pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
