In the wake of England’s heavy Ashes defeat against Australia, the national cricket selectors have announced significant changes to the Test squad. Three uncapped players—Somerset’s James Rew, Durham batter Emilio Gay, and Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker—have been called up, while seasoned campaigners Ollie Robinson and Rehan Ahmed earn recalls ahead of the upcoming Test series against New Zealand at Lord’s.
The inclusion of Robinson, a Sussex seamer with an impressive 76 wickets at 22.92 in just 20 Tests, is particularly noteworthy. Despite concerns about his physical durability and past tensions with leadership, Robinson’s strong county performances have paved the way for his return as England’s front-line new-ball bowler—a role that has been vacant following the gradual retirements of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Chris Woakes.
Durham’s Emiliano Gay, a favorite of newly appointed selector Marcus North and captain Ben Stokes, replaces the dropped Zak Crawley. Gay’s commanding form, highlighted by three centuries, 522 runs, and a superb average of 92 in Division Two, makes him a promising addition at the top of the order. Although primarily batting at number three for Durham, he is well-versed as an opener and is expected to bring solidity to the lineup.

James Rew impressed as a middle-order batsman and is set to provide depth both with the bat and as wicketkeeping backup to Jamie Smith. Meanwhile, 23-year-old Baker stands to benefit from the absences of Jofra Archer—resting after the IPL—and the injured Brydon Carse. The fast bowler’s pace and positive attitude have impressed England’s management, earning him a spot ahead of Matthew Potts, who is rebuilding confidence after a tough Ashes campaign, and Surrey’s Matthew Fisher, who remains in the squad as injury cover.
Leg-spinning all-rounder Rehan Ahmed, England’s youngest Test cricketer, also returns to the squad ready to make his home soil debut. He joins Shoaib Bashir, who was in the squad throughout the Ashes but did not get a chance to play, while off-spinner Will Jacks, who played four Tests, and former vice-captain Ollie Pope have been left out.
Rob Key, managing director of men’s cricket, expressed optimism about the squad. “We’ve selected a squad with a fantastic blend of proven international performers, strong county form, and players with huge potential. Emilio, James, and Sonny have earned their places through consistent performances and their composure under pressure. It’s also great to welcome back Rehan, Matt, and Ollie, who bring vital experience and quality to the group.”
The squad for the first Rothesay Test against New Zealand reads: B Stokes (c), R Ahmed, G Atkinson, S Baker, S Bashir, J Bethell, H Brook (vc), B Duckett, M Fisher, E Gay, J Rew, O Robinson, J Root, J Smith (wkt), J Tongue.
