Somerset is off to a striking start in 2025, boasting three consecutive wins in the County Championship and an unbeaten record in their opening Vitality T20 Blast matches. The shift from four-day cricket to the excitement of white-ball cricket has energized the squad and their fans alike.
The county kicked off their T20 campaign with a commanding victory over a formidable Surrey side at the County Ground on Friday night. This was quickly followed by a dominant eight-wicket win against Essex at Chelmsford, where Will Smeed dazzled with an unbeaten 81 off 54 balls, steering Somerset to a comfortable success.
Looking ahead, Somerset prepares for a key fixture on Friday at Sussex—one of the few teams to also win both of their opening Blast matches in the Southern section, promising a fierce contest.

Reflecting on the recent victory, head coach Jason Kerr praised the team’s professionalism and resilience. “Our bowling in the first half was exceptional,” Kerr said. “Craig Overton and Matt Henry broke through early, and the team maintained pressure during the middle overs. Ben Green’s three wickets in a single over turned the tide decisively. The chase was controlled and confident.”
Kerr was especially impressed by Will Smeed’s performance. “Will is a prodigious talent who consistently hits the ball hard. What stood out was his maturity—not just his power hitting but his ability to remain composed through to the end.”
The current run of five straight victories across two formats marks a significant turnaround after a sluggish start to the County Championship, where Somerset had drawn two matches and lost two in their first four games.
“April already feels like a distant memory,” Kerr acknowledged. “While the team showed promise early on, sustained confidence was lacking. But three successive Championship wins followed by our Blast successes have really boosted morale in the dressing room.”
Somerset fans eagerly await the team’s next home appearance on Thursday, June 12, hosting Middlesex in the Blast. The schedule intensifies with a trip to rivals Gloucestershire—the 2024 final winners—on June 13, then Kent visiting Taunton on June 15, as the side faces three tough matches in four days.
