Somerset all-rounder Craig Overton described recent performances as “a great few days” for the county after they climbed to the top of Division One in the County Championship. Their emphatic victory over Glamorgan, combined with Nottinghamshire’s draw against Leicestershire, has put Somerset in pole position with three rounds of fixtures remaining.
Somerset’s commanding win over Glamorgan was achieved inside three days, securing victory by an innings and 64 runs after bowling out the Welsh side for 183 on Friday. This result enabled Somerset to move four points clear of former leaders Nottinghamshire, with Warwickshire a further point behind.
Overton reflected on the team’s effort, stating, “We knew going into the game that we wanted a big performance to get some sort of payback for our earlier defeat by Glamorgan this season. Credit to all the boys for a real team performance. To finish the match in two-and-a-half days on what was a decent pitch was a tremendous effort.”

He continued, “Taking early wickets was crucial; it could have been a long day if Glamorgan had started well. Now, with more time to prepare for our next game, it’s important given the hectic schedule. The plan is for me to play in all three remaining matches. Opportunities like this – to win a County Championship – don’t come often, so I’m excited to be involved.”
Somerset are chasing their first ever County Championship title and face away games at Leicestershire and Yorkshire, as well as a home fixture against Surrey, in their remaining matches.
Nottinghamshire’s hopes of retaining the top spot were hindered by Leicestershire, who not only avoided defeat but limited Nottinghamshire to just two bowling points. Despite trailing by 201 runs on first innings and being seven wickets down overnight, Leicestershire fought back to secure a draw.
On the third day, after slipping to 259 for nine early on and still 43 runs short of avoiding the follow-on, Leicestershire’s Ben Scriven (54) and Callum Davey (49 not out) forged a record partnership for this fixture, ensuring Nottinghamshire had to bat again.
Dillon Pennington secured his second five-wicket haul of the season when he had Ian Holland caught at first slip, leaving Nottinghamshire needing two balls to take the ninth wicket and secure the third bowling point. However, Scriven survived that spell, and although Ben Cox was dismissed next ball, it was too late to claim the additional bowling point.
This combination of results means Somerset currently sit four points clear at the top of the Division One table with three matches left to play.
