Somerset’s Grand Pier: A Seaside Attraction Outshining Blackpool and Brighton

When most people think of classic British piers, Blackpool or Brighton usually come to mind. However, tucked away along the Bristol Channel in North Somerset is a seaside destination that rivals them both — Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier.

Since opening in 1904, the Grand Pier has become a cherished fixture of the town’s coastline. Despite suffering two devastating fires—in 1930 and again in 2008—the pier was fully rebuilt and now blends its rich heritage with modern entertainment to create an exceptional family-friendly experience.

The current pavilion, completed in 2010, offers a wide range of attractions spread over two levels, ensuring visitors of all ages find something to enjoy. Classic seaside staples like fish and chips, rock candy, and traditional 2p arcade machines are alongside contemporary highlights including glow-in-the-dark go-karts, mini golf, a free fall ride, dodgems, a sidewinder ride, and even a spooky house of horrors.

Families appreciate the value, with a wristband granting access to unlimited rides for a small fee, and entry costing just £2. Visitors have praised the venue for its careful blend of nostalgia and modern fun, as well as its spacious coastal views and thoughtfully laid-out attractions.

The pier also caters to hunger with an array of eateries offering everything from traditional fish and chips to doughnuts and ice cream, allowing guests to relax and refuel without leaving the grounds.

While Weston-super-Mare boasts a second pier, Birnbeck Pier, it remains closed and under restoration, leaving the Grand Pier as the main hub for seaside entertainment in the area. When Birnbeck reopens, expected around 2027, it will serve as a historic landmark with a vision to further enrich the town’s coastal charm.

For an affordable day out that combines classic British seaside traditions with contemporary thrills, Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier stands as a top contender, offering an experience many argue surpasses the more famous piers of Blackpool and Brighton.
