A commanding bowling display from Yorkshire has severely damaged Somerset’s chances of clinching the Rothesay County Championship title. At Headingley, the hosts handed the pre-match leaders a crushing defeat, reducing their hopes significantly.
Chasing a target of 287 runs, Somerset began day four at 73 for three but swiftly collapsed to 79 for six. They were eventually bowled out for just 101 shortly before midday, losing the match by 185 runs.
This marked Somerset’s third defeat of the season and their second to Yorkshire. Consequently, Warwickshire have taken an 11-point lead at the top of Division One, with Somerset now in second place; notably, Somerset have yet to win this championship. Nottinghamshire remain contenders and could still impact the final standings, regardless of their outcome against Sussex today.

Yorkshire, positioned mid-table, celebrated their fifth victory in 13 matches, following a win at Taunton in May. The new ball seamers Ben Coad and Ben Cliff were instrumental, taking four and three wickets respectively.
Cliff’s exceptional performance earned him career-best match figures of 11 for 105, ranking as the 13th best in Yorkshire’s first-class cricket history. Early in the day, Cliff and Coad dismantled Somerset’s batting lineup by taking three wickets within five balls, shifting the momentum decisively in Yorkshire’s favour. They removed the not out batsmen Tom Lammonby and Tom Abell, as Somerset slid from 73 for three to 76 for five runs.
Lammonby was caught behind off Cliff for 32, while Abell was caught at backward point off Coad. Later, at the end of the 39th over, Coad claimed James Rew caught at second slip, leaving Somerset in a precarious position.
Yorkshire entered the day confident but were particularly eager to dismiss Craig Overton, who had previously delivered a stunning unbeaten 79 off 30 balls in a Vitality Blast quarter-final at Headingley. Cliff was successful in having Overton caught behind as he pushed forward, and shortly after, Lewis Gregory was dismissed lbw, leaving Somerset 88 for eight.
These wickets were Cliff’s tenth and eleventh of the match, following his eight wickets in the first innings. Migael Pretorius, who had scored a first-innings half-century, was caught behind by George Hill, reducing Somerset further to 92 for nine.
Matthew Revis then sealed the victory for Yorkshire by yorking Jake Ball, ending day four after just 82 minutes of play.
Looking ahead, Somerset will host Surrey at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton for the final round of fixtures, commencing on Thursday. Yorkshire will continue as potential spoilers when they travel to Trent Bridge to face Nottinghamshire.
