Somerset’s bid for the Rothesay County Championship title suffered a severe setback as Yorkshire’s relentless bowling led to a comprehensive defeat at Headingley. Chasing a target of 287, Somerset began day four at 73 for three but quickly collapsed to 79 for six and were eventually bowled out for 101 shortly before midday, handing Yorkshire a 185-run victory.
This marked Somerset’s third defeat of the season and their second loss to Yorkshire, allowing Warwickshire to extend their lead at the top of Division One to 11 points. Somerset, who have yet to secure a County Championship title, now face an uphill battle to claim the trophy. Nottinghamshire remain contenders and could still influence the championship outcome regardless of today’s result against Sussex.
Yorkshire, positioned in mid-table, claimed their fifth win in 13 matches, backing up their earlier success against Somerset at Taunton in May. The new ball seamers Ben Coad and Ben Cliff were instrumental in the victory, taking four and three wickets respectively. Cliff ended with career-best match figures of 11 for 105, marking the 13th best match performance in Yorkshire’s first-class history.

Early on day four, Cliff and Coad effected a swift collapse, claiming key wickets within the first half hour and reducing Somerset from 73 for three to 76 for five. Tom Lammonby was dismissed for 32, caught behind off Cliff, while captain Tom Abell was caught at backward point off Coad. James Rew was soon caught at second slip, leaving Somerset under significant pressure.
Yorkshire particularly targeted Craig Overton, who had previously troubled them with an explosive 79 not out earlier in the season. Cliff trapped Overton caught behind for five and then dismissed Lewis Gregory lbw shortly after.
At 88 for eight, Somerset’s innings was effectively over amid overcast skies at Headingley. Migael Pretorius, who had scored a first-innings fifty, was caught behind by George Hill, leaving Somerset 92 for nine. Matthew Revis then yorked Jake Ball to end the innings. The entire day’s play lasted just 82 minutes.
Looking ahead, Somerset will host Surrey at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton for the final round of matches commencing on Thursday. Meanwhile, Yorkshire will aim to continue their strong form as they travel to Nottinghamshire’s Trent Bridge ground, poised to affect the championship outcome further.
