Jack Leach has acknowledged the growing excitement within Somerset’s dressing room as they chase their first County Championship title in the club’s history.
Leach delivered a captivating spin bowling performance, guiding Somerset to a commanding eight-wicket win over Essex at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton on Sunday. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner claimed 5 wickets for 81 runs from 55.2 overs, showcasing impeccable line and length as he dismantled the Essex batting lineup. Essex were dismissed for 412 in their second innings, following an overnight score of 314 for 3. Notable contributions from Essex’s Charlie Allison and Matt Critchley, who scored 114 and 94 respectively, could not prevent the visitors' collapse.
Somerset were set a modest target of 102 runs, which they comfortably achieved by 3.45pm with just two wickets down in 19.2 overs. Tom Lammonby remained unbeaten on 39, while Josh Thomas contributed 31 runs.

With this victory, Somerset secured 22 points, narrowing the gap to just two points behind Division One leaders Nottinghamshire.
Speaking after the match, Leach reflected on the team’s mindset: “We were all a bit frustrated last night after things hadn’t gone for us, but when we turned up this morning head coach Jason Kerr told us to focus on the fact that Essex were effectively 3-3 and to take things from there.
“In the end, the team performance is what matters most and we can take a lot of confidence from beating a really good side.
“The Championship race is wide open and there is a lot of excitement in the dressing room because we know what winning a first ever title would mean to us and our supporters. We are right in there with a chance.
“It was good that Lewis Gregory was able to bowl today and, although Jake Ball had to go off injured, we don’t think it is anything serious.
“It has not been an easy season for me and I still don’t think I am bowling at my best. But hopefully that will come over the last five games.”
Essex’s director of cricket, Chris Silverwood, conceded Somerset deserved the win despite their strong performance on day three. He said: “We won day three, but lost all the other days, so Somerset fully deserved their victory.
“I stand by our decision to bowl first because of how conditions were at the start of the game. We simply didn’t bowl well enough on day one.
“We have an experienced attack and I wouldn’t offer any excuses for that. On the second morning we bowled a lot better, but by then we were behind in the game.
“If you don’t perform to your best at this level, teams like Somerset will beat you. And we were not at our best in this match.”
Somerset will next face Sussex in an away Championship match in Hove, starting on Thursday. Meanwhile, Warwickshire and leaders Nottinghamshire are set to clash at Edgbaston this week.
