Somerset’s Coastal B3191 Road Faces Permanent Closure Amid Funding Shortfall

Residents of Somerset have just days left to object to the permanent closure of the B3191 Cleeve Hill—a crucial coastal road linking Watchet and Blue Anchor. This route has long been essential for local commuters and provided a vital alternative for holidaymakers whenever the A39 between Minehead and Williton became congested.

The road was closed indefinitely by Somerset County Council in January 2023 due to severe coastal erosion concerns. While pedestrians and cyclists have been permitted to use the route since spring 2024, motor vehicles remain banned throughout the affected stretch. Since April 2023, the now restructured Somerset Council has announced plans to formalize the closure until funding is secured to divert the road inland, mirroring the recent permanent closure of Chinnock Hollow near Yeovil.

Residents have until June 12 to submit formal objections to the proposed traffic regulation order (TRO). Both local Conservative and Liberal Democrat representatives are urging the council to halt the closure and intensify efforts to reopen the road. James Wright, an Exmoor farmer and chairman of the South West Conservative Rural Forum, is calling on the community to sign an open letter opposing the closure.

“This road is a lifeline for West Somerset, supporting local economies, communities, emergency services, and tourism. A permanent closure without a replacement will have devastating effects,” Wright stated. “Safety is paramount, but the council must pursue transparent and sustainable alternatives rather than abandoning this key route.”

Rachel Gilmour, Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Minehead, echoed these concerns and has urged the Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander MP, to visit Watchet to witness firsthand the impact on businesses. “While the closure was unavoidable due to safety risks, my advocacy continues for durable solutions to restore vital transport infrastructure for Watchet and Blue Anchor,” she said. “I remain committed to representing my constituents and will press the government for action.”

Those wishing to oppose the closure can sign James Wright’s open letter at www.james-wright.org.uk/news/add-your-name-save-b3191-cleeve-hill-watchet. Further details on the TRO proposals are available at www.somerset.gov.uk/roads-travel-and-parking/traffic-regulation-orders.
