Somerset’s Ambitious Pursuit of Their First County Championship Title

Despite recent successes in white-ball cricket, Somerset County Cricket Club has yet to claim the coveted County Championship — a title that remains their ultimate goal after 151 years. With back-to-back third-place finishes bringing them closer than ever, Somerset is eager to break new ground this season starting with a tough opener against reigning champions Nottinghamshire.

Director of Cricket Andy Hurry reflects the club’s mindset: “There’s this real drive, ambition, belief that there’s an opportunity to create history. Starting against the current champions sets a benchmark for us. The Championship isn’t won on a single day. Consistency is key.”

While the team aims to avoid a relegation battle, achieving sustained top-level performance has never been more important. Nevertheless, challenges lie ahead. Several key players including Sean Dickson, Josh Davey, Ben Green, and Kasey Aldridge have departed, and only one overseas player, Josh Shaw from Gloucestershire, has been added to the squad. Despite Shaw’s career bowling average hovering near 40, Hurry is confident his experience will strengthen the attack and open opportunities for emerging talent.

“He brings a wealth of experience and skill. We’re pleased with this acquisition,” said Hurry. “Balancing immediate competitiveness with nurturing our homegrown talent is vital. We take pride in our pathway and succession plans.”

Head Coach Jason Kerr acknowledges the perceived lean squad isn’t a strategic gamble but a testament to belief in the academy’s quality and upcoming prospects. Promising talents like Alfie Ogborne and Thomas Rew, an 18-year-old U19 World Cup standout, are pushing for first-team places. Kerr emphasizes a measured approach, especially with young Rew balancing cricket with school priorities.

Somerset also boasts strength in spin bowling, notably with Jack Leach, whom Kerr describes as “the best spinner in the country.” Leach complements a formidable bowling attack and remains world-class across surfaces, contributing vital versatility.

With a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising youth, Somerset’s progressive outlook aims to transform their long-held ambition into historic success. The campaign ahead demands resilience, adaptability, and unwavering consistency as they chase that elusive County Championship title.
