Somerset’s 150th Birthday Celebrations Marred by Narrow Defeat to Warwickshire

Somerset’s much-anticipated 150th anniversary celebrations hit a bittersweet note as Warwickshire edged a thrilling three-wicket victory at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton during the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Opening the innings, Tom Lammonby showcased exceptional form, scoring a commanding 100 off 111 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. His partnership of 143 runs with James Rew, who contributed a swift 81 featuring five fours and two sixes, anchored Somerset’s total to a competitive 309 for 8. Younger brother Thomas Rew also impressed with a quickfire 41, aiding the team’s strong finish.

Despite striking first ball and posting a formidable target, Somerset’s bowlers found it tough to contain Warwickshire’s chase. Local favorite Jake Lintott led the fightback, scoring a rapid 50 off 34 deliveries with seven fours and a six, while Kai Smith remained unbeaten on 45, providing crucial support. Their partnership proved decisive, as Warwickshire reached 310 for 7 with just three balls to spare.

Somerset’s innings saw moments of brilliance, particularly Lammonby’s elegant cover drives and minimal errors until he was caught at short fine leg off Ed Barnard’s slower-ball bouncer. James Rew’s dismissal shortly after added pressure to the home side’s pursuit of a 300-plus total. However, contributions from Thomas Rew’s inventive hitting—highlighted by two reverse-swept sixes—and Alfie Ogborne’s unbeaten 30 off 16 balls helped Somerset push their total beyond 300.

In the Warwickshire innings, consistency was key. Rob Yates, Zen Malik, and Hamza Shaikh supported the chase, but the defining moment came from the partnership between Lintott and Kai Smith. Warwickshire clinched the win in a nail-biting finish, ending Somerset’s celebrations on a disappointing note.
