Somerset Woman Turns Vintage Clothing into Charity Venture to Support ME Research

Ali Payne, a 40-year-old woman from Frome, Somerset, has been living with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) — also known as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) — for over a decade. This long-term, incapacitating condition often leaves her bedbound and unable to leave her home. Determined to make a difference, Ali has launched a charity appeal seeking donations of pre-loved and vintage clothing to raise funds for vital ME research.

Before her diagnosis 12 years ago, Ali led an active lifestyle, enjoying exercise and jogging several times a week. Her health drastically declined after falling ill at work, enduring numerous doctor visits and hospital stays. Unable to continue working in childcare, Ali found inspiration to create a new source of income aligned with her health limitations.

Through her Instagram shop, Little Splash Fashion, Ali sells donated vintage and pre-owned clothing and accessories, dedicating 25% of all proceeds to The ME Association, a charity that supports millions living with this currently incurable illness. She welcomes donations of clean, good-quality items—including women’s, men’s, and children’s clothes, as well as jewellery and bags—and even offers to cover postage costs.

Ali says, “Because of ME/CFS, my health prevents me from working traditional hours. Little Splash Fashion allows me to work from home within my limits and pursue my love of fashion. I hope to rally the community around this cause to help fund vital research.”

Ali is supported by her husband Jason and their two children, Evelyn and Felix. Her symptoms fluctuate daily; on better days, she can leave the house with assistance, but on worse days she remains bedbound.

Jim Morrison, fundraising and development manager at The ME Association, praised Ali’s initiative: “Ali’s creativity and determination are inspiring. We encourage everyone to search their wardrobes and donate to Little Splash Fashion to help support people affected by ME/CFS.”

With over 1,700 Instagram followers and growing, Little Splash Fashion offers a unique way for locals and beyond to contribute. Those interested in donating can find Ali’s Instagram at @little_splash_fashion.
