Somerset Woman Breaks Barriers as Non-Verbal Motivational Speaker

Ellise Hollie Hayward, a 24-year-old woman from Somerset living with cerebral palsy, has been nominated for the Positive Role Model award at the National Diversity Awards. Despite being non-verbal, Ellise has become a motivational speaker, demonstrating that communication extends beyond words.

Ellise expressed her gratitude for the nomination, saying, “When I first saw the email, I felt a wave of excitement and pure joy. It’s such a special feeling to know that someone believes in what I do and chose to nominate me.” She emphasized the importance of community and support in her journey, acknowledging everyone who encouraged and believed in her.

Living with cerebral palsy, a condition affecting movement and coordination, Ellise faces daily challenges. She uses a walking frame or a push-along wheelchair to get around and credits her family, especially her mother, as her inspiration. Despite never experiencing simple physical abilities without struggle or pain, Ellise’s outlook remains positive: “I’m never sad because I’m here and alive and life is worth living.”

Ellise’s passion for public speaking began at college when she delivered assemblies to students at the Preston School in Yeovil in 2019. Encouraged by her medical support advisor, she pursued opportunities to share her story to raise awareness about inclusion. She now speaks at schools, educational conferences, and healthcare events, sharing personal experiences to help others understand diverse needs.

Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)—a range of tools that facilitate communication without spoken words—Ellise connects with her audiences effectively. These tools can include sign language, eye-pointing communication frames, and electronic speaking aids similar to those used by Stephen Hawking.

Through her inspiring work, Ellise proves that there are many ways to find and share your voice. Her story is a powerful reminder that determination and innovative communication can break down barriers and create positive change.
