Somerset Woman Breaks Barriers as Non-Verbal Motivational Speaker

Ellise Hollie Hayward, a 24-year-old woman from Somerset living with cerebral palsy, has been nominated for the Positive Role Model award at the National Diversity Awards. Despite being non-verbal, Ellise has become a motivational speaker, proving that there are many ways to find and use your voice.

Speaking to Somerset Live, Ellise expressed her gratitude: “When I first saw the email, I felt a wave of excitement and pure joy. It’s such a special feeling to know that someone believes in what I do and chose to nominate me. That act of kindness and support means more to me than I can truly express.”

Her journey has not been easy. Cerebral palsy affects movement and coordination, making everyday tasks take twice as long. Ellise uses a walking frame or push-along wheelchair to get around and has a strong support network including her mother, family, and friends. Despite lifelong challenges, Ellise remains positive: “I have never known what it’s like to talk, run, walk or feed myself without struggling or pain, and I’m never sad because I’m here and alive. Life is worth living.”

Ellise discovered her passion for public speaking during her first year of college when she delivered assemblies at Preston School in Yeovil. Encouraged by her medical support advisor, she expanded her reach to schools, educational conferences, and healthcare professionals, sharing her personal experiences and advocating for greater awareness of inclusion and accessibility.

To communicate, Ellise uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools, which encompass various methods from British Sign Language to eye-pointing frames and electronic aids similar to those used by Stephen Hawking. Through these technologies, she demonstrates that communication transcends speech alone.

Ellise’s inspiring story highlights that determination, support, and innovative communication tools can help anyone overcome obstacles and make a powerful impact. Her nomination celebrates her role as a leading voice for diversity and inclusion.
