Somerset County Cricket Club has recently secured the services of talented 17-year-old batsman Thomas Rew on a short-term contract, enabling him to participate across all formats from May 21 to June 26.
Thomas, an England Under-19 international, has a strong cricketing pedigree, with his brother James Rew already an established figure in the county side and recently appointed captain of the England Lions for their series against India A.
Having made his Second XI debut last summer, Thomas impressed audiences last week by scoring an unbeaten century for a PCC Select XI in a thrilling victory against the Zimbabwe national team in Leicester.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Thomas said, “I’m really excited about signing this contract with Somerset and look forward to being around the squad. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the best players, and if given the chance to play, I’ll do my best to contribute to the team’s success.”
Matt Drakeley, Somerset’s Director of Talent & Development, praised Thomas for his consistent performances and dedication: “Thomas has proven himself at Academy and Second XI level, adapting well to the demands of each format. He is a grounded individual, and this contract is just the start of his promising journey.”
Meanwhile, James Rew will lead the England Lions for the first time in their opening match at the Spitfire Ground, St. Lawrence, Canterbury on May 30, followed by a second fixture at Northampton on June 6.
In team news, Somerset heads to Durham tomorrow for a County Championship match. Kasey Aldridge and Andy Umeed have been added to the squad following a well-earned victory against Sussex. Tom Banton will be unavailable as he prepares for England’s upcoming white-ball matches.
