Somerset Village to Gain 37 New Homes, Emphasizing Bungalows and Affordability

Construction is set to begin this summer on 37 new homes in Banwell, a village in North Somerset located about six miles east of Weston-super-Mare. This ambitious project aims to help address the region’s housing shortage while prioritizing accessibility and environmental sustainability.

Nearly 30% of the homes – 11 out of 37 – are designated as affordable housing, offering options for residents unable to secure homes at typical market prices. In addition, about 65% of the properties will be single-storey dwellings, catering to homeowners with accessibility needs.

Sales and Marketing Director for Newland Homes, Marcus Evans, noted, “This development has been a long time in the making. We’re eager to begin construction and remain committed to being considerate neighbors throughout the process and beyond.”

One standout feature of this project is its focus on bungalows and chalet bungalows. Nationally, bungalows accounted for just 1% of new build registrations in 2024, with only 1,285 constructed across the country. Yet, Banwell’s development will feature 24 such homes, including five affordable bungalows.

Evans explained the significance of this choice: “Bungalows are becoming increasingly rare, despite high demand. They appeal strongly to older buyers and downsizers who wish to remain in their community, but are also attractive to younger families. Meeting this demand benefits both the business and the community.”

Environmental sustainability is central to the development, with every home equipped with solar panels and air source heat pumps. This commitment positions the project ahead of forthcoming regulations, such as the government’s plan to mandate solar panels on all new homes by 2027.

Newland Homes also plans to integrate local wildlife habitats and ensure the new houses harmonize with Banwell’s character. The variety in storey heights will help the development blend seamlessly into the village skyline.

Newland Homes has a presence across North Somerset, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire, with this latest project marking a significant step forward in creating accessible, affordable, and eco-friendly housing in Banwell.
