Somerset Vet Reveals Why a Wagging Tail Doesn’t Always Mean a Happy Dog

It’s a common belief that a wagging tail means a happy dog, but this simple gesture isn’t always a straightforward sign of joy. A Somerset vet from Green Pastures Vets has shared insights that reveal a wagging tail can express a variety of emotions, including anxiety and stress.

In a TikTok video from the Weston-based practice, a staff member explained, “Sometimes, yes—a wagging tail means a happy dog. But it can also be a sign that they’re worried or anxious.” The vet emphasized the importance of observing other behaviors to better understand the dog’s feelings. “If a dog is licking its lips or yawning while wagging its tail, they might be trying to self-soothe or calm themselves.”

This nuanced approach to interpreting tail movements helps owners respond appropriately and keep their pets comfortable and safe. Animal welfare charity Blue Cross also highlights how dogs use their tails as part of a broader communication system. Tail movements are instinctive and convey messages not only to other dogs but to humans as well.

Blue Cross points out that certain tail behaviors—such as slow wagging, lowered tail position, or tucked tail—can signal that a dog is nervous or uneasy. In such cases, the best response is to give the dog space and avoid forcing interaction.

Understanding the full spectrum of a dog’s body language, including tail cues, is essential. “It’s our responsibility to pay attention to what our dogs are telling us through their whole body,” says Blue Cross. Doing so helps keep our four-legged friends both happy and safe.
