Britain boasts an estimated 13 to 15.5 million dogs, with breeds like Labradors, Golden Retrievers, French Bulldogs, and Cocker Spaniels topping popularity charts. Yet, according to a recent TikTok video shared by Green Pastures Vets, it’s the border collie that earns the title of “hardest” dog to care for.
In the video, a veterinary technician named Nina was asked to sort various breeds into three categories: “Easy,” “Tricky,” or “Hard,” based on ownership challenges. Labradors, greyhounds, and Jack Russells were all tagged “Easy,” rated for their generally straightforward care requirements. Pugs and huskies were placed in the “Tricky” category, with pugs specifically noted for their health vulnerabilities, like Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). This condition, caused by their flattened snouts, can lead to breathing difficulties and overheating, sometimes necessitating surgery.
However, border collies stood alone in the “Hard” category. Though Nina didn’t expand on her reasoning, veterinary specialists like the PDSA highlight that this breed demands intense daily exercise — at least two hours — and significant mental stimulation, making them unsuitable for casual dog owners or those leading less active lifestyles. Border collies excel at agility and herding but can develop behavioral issues without proper outlets for their energy.
