Somerset Tortoise and Hare Bike Run Returns for 14th Year

The beloved Somerset Tortoise and Hare Bike Run is back for its 14th year, inviting motorbike and scooter enthusiasts to explore the picturesque Somerset countryside. Organised by Wells Classic Motorcycle Club, the event also includes a “Snail” category for riders preferring a shorter, more relaxed route.

The ride will take place on Sunday, July 20, starting at 10 a.m. from the new venue, Wells Rugby Club on Charter Way, following an optional ride-out on Saturday. Participants will be officially flagged off by the Mayor, assisted by the Town Crier, as they set off on their varied routes around the Mendip Hills.

A spokesperson for the event shared, “Riders travel from far and wide to enjoy this ever-popular ride, which not only offers a fantastic day out but also raises vital funds for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and EVS Freewheelers (Blood Bikes).”

Since its inception in 2010, the event has raised over £37,000, growing from a modest £400 in its first year. Much of the fundraising success stems from the event brochure, with local businesses supporting through advertising.

The Hare and Tortoise groups will commence their ride from Wells along the A39 towards Bristol, passing through scenic spots such as Priddy Mineries, West Harptree, Bishop Sutton, and Winford before diverging on separated routes to a coffee stop at Churchill War Memorial Hall. Meanwhile, the Snail group will enjoy a shorter Mendip route to join everyone at the coffee stop.

On the return journey, they will pass Burrington Coombe and Cheddar Gorge. The groups split again at Rodney Stoke: the Hare group rides back up the Mendips, the Tortoise returns to Wells, while the Snail group avoids the Mendips entirely.

All participants will regroup at Wells Rugby Club for a lunch break. The Hare and Tortoise riders will then continue their scenic ride through the eastern Mendips, visiting Doulting, Chelynch, Holwell, Stoney Stratton, and Shepton Mallet before returning to Wells for tea, cake, awards, and a raffle.

Spaces remain available for new entrants. For more information or to register, visit www.wellsclassicmotorcycleclub.weebly.com or email [email protected].

Entry fees are £15 for solo riders and £19 with a pillion in advance, including coffee or tea vouchers and a brochure. On-the-day entry is £20 solo or £23 with a pillion. Pre-ordered breakfasts will be served from 7:45 to 9:15 a.m. on event day, with orders and payment due by the evening of Tuesday, July 15.

All participants will receive vouchers for hot drinks, biscuits, and cake, continuing the tradition from previous years.
