Somerset is preparing for over four months of essential roadworks aimed at replacing outdated traffic signals across several key locations. If approved, the proposed upgrades will take place at Stapleton Cross, Martock, A37 Lydford Cross Keys, and the B3153 at Lovington throughout the remainder of the year.
The existing traffic signals have been in operation for more than 30 years and are nearing the end of their functional lifespan. Somerset Council has confirmed that there will be phased road closures and traffic management measures during the construction period to minimize disruption.
Councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for highways and transport, stated: “We have made significant progress updating ageing traffic lights, with major schemes completed at Street and Dunster. It’s crucial to upgrade these old signals to prevent potential failures that could impact road safety.”

Work at Stapleton Cross, Martock, and A37 Lydford Cross Keys is scheduled to start on Monday, June 22, and is expected to be completed by early September. During this period, 4-way temporary traffic lights and overnight road closures will be implemented, along with clearly signed diversions.
Following that, the B3153 at Lovington will undergo signal replacement starting early September, with the project continuing through to November 2026. This phase will involve full road closures, and alternative routes will be clearly signposted for drivers.
To keep the community informed, Somerset Council has organized a public drop-in session on Monday, June 1, at Charltons Community Centre, Charlton Adam (TA11 7BE), from 3 pm to 6:30 pm. Residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the plans and ask any questions.
Councillor Wilkins added, “We are committed to minimizing disruption throughout these upgrades and appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we carry out this vital work.”
