Somerset Team Behind M5 Junction Upgrades Shortlisted for Prestigious Award

The Somerset Council’s Infrastructure Programmes Group (IPG), responsible for major road network improvements including key M5 junction upgrades, has been shortlisted for the Team of the Year award at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) annual awards.

Since its formation in 2015, the IPG has overseen over £110 million in strategic highway enhancements across Somerset. The team has earned a strong reputation for delivering complex infrastructure projects on schedule, within budget, and to exceptional standards of quality.

Projects completed under the IPG’s leadership span a range of critical upgrades that have significantly improved traffic flow and safety on Somerset’s roads. This consistent success showcases the team’s expertise and commitment to the county’s transport infrastructure.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, praised the team’s dedication: “Being shortlisted for this prestigious national award is a testament to the hard work, expertise, and collaborative spirit of our IPG. Their consistent delivery of high-quality projects benefits our communities and sets a benchmark for public sector infrastructure delivery.”

Looking ahead, the IPG is preparing to commence work on the Edithmead roundabout upgrade, which connects Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea to junction 22 of the M5. Preparatory stages are complete, with the exact timing to be coordinated alongside North Somerset Council. This partnership aims to reduce journey times between the M5 and Bristol Airport through several targeted improvements.

Additionally, the IPG is poised to support potential upgrades on the B3191 Cleeve Hill corridor between Watchet and Blue Anchor, pending approval of a government structures fund bid.

The award winner will be announced later this year in London, highlighting Somerset’s impactful contributions to the country’s highway infrastructure.
