Somerset Suffers Setback as Joe Root Spurs Yorkshire to County Championship Victory

Joe Root was the standout performer with the ball as Yorkshire delivered a commanding 75-run victory over Somerset in the Rothesay County Championship Division One clash at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton. The win marked Yorkshire’s impressive comeback after conceding a first innings deficit of 112 runs.

Somerset began their chase of 260 for victory on a flat pitch but quickly found themselves in trouble. Early wickets fell rapidly, with Archie Vaughan bowled for four by George Hill and Tom Lammonby soon following, leaving Somerset at 21 for three. James Rew’s dismissal behind the stumps to spinner Dom Bess compounded the collapse.

Despite a gritty 57 from Josh Thomas, Somerset were bowled out for 184 shortly after tea. Root’s impressive figures of four for 49 and Dom Bess’s four for 60 proved decisive. Craig Overton contributed with four for 94 during Yorkshire’s innings, which totalled 371.

The morning session featured blue skies but was marred by Somerset’s familiar top-order struggles. Tom Abell, in excellent form, provided some resistance reaching 41 before edging Bess to slip. Young debutant Rew showed promise with a composed 30 but was ultimately dismissed by Root.

As wickets tumbled, Somerset’s hopes faded. Will Smeed and Migael Pretorius were dismissed in quick succession off Root’s bowling. Bess wrapped up the innings by bowling last man Alfie Ogborne, securing Yorkshire’s victory. With this result, Yorkshire claimed 19 points while Somerset earned only four, costing them the Division One lead.
