Somerset have encountered a significant injury setback ahead of their T20 match against Glamorgan on Friday night, with key players Will Smeed and Tom Lammonby both ruled out of the fixture. This development compounds an already growing injury list that includes Tom Kohler-Cadmore.
Will Smeed, who impressed with a swift 59 in Somerset’s opening day victory over Hampshire and shone with a top score of 94 in last year’s final, will miss the game after suffering a broken hand. Meanwhile, Tom Lammonby, who has controversially bowled the opening over in both matches this season, has been sidelined due to an elbow injury.
In response, Somerset have added promising talents Archie Vaughan, Josh Shaw, and Alfie Ogborne to their squad. Vaughan, yet to debut in T20 cricket, has been a strong performer opening for the Second XI and is expected to fill Smeed’s spot at the top of the order. Fast bowlers Josh Shaw and Alfie Ogborne, the latter returning from England Lions duty without having made a T20 debut, provide additional options to strengthen Somerset’s bowling attack.

Somerset have kicked off their title defense robustly, securing dominant seven-wicket victories against Hampshire and Warwickshire. In contrast, Glamorgan have yet to taste victory after losing their first two matches.
Head Coach Jason Kerr expressed optimism despite the injuries, stating: “I’m thoroughly delighted with the start to our title defence. It’s been two comprehensive performances, but as always in T20 cricket, there’s room to improve each game. We’ve been focusing on a few specific areas this week and are eager for the challenge against Glamorgan.”
He added, “Glamorgan are a strong side with individual match-winners. Every team we face has quality players, and Glamorgan are no exception. They’ve had some exciting games and will be ready to take us on. We aim to perform well on the road and secure valuable points.”
Regarding the injury impact, Kerr noted: “Unfortunately, Will Smeed is out after sustaining a broken hand at Edgbaston, so there will be a change at the top of our batting order.”
While Vaughan will likely replace Smeed as an opener, Lammonby’s absence may lead to further tactical changes. Josh Thomas might come in to provide a second spin option or a comparable replacement in the middle order. Additional bowlers Ogborne and Shaw could bolster the bowling lineup. Somerset have shown solid batting depth so far, with Lewis Goldsworthy, who batted in the lower order in recent matches, proving a reliable option.
Despite the setbacks, Somerset remain determined to build on their strong start and continue their successful campaign.
