Somerset’s campaign to defend their Vitality T20 Blast title took a significant blow following a 36-run loss to Worcestershire Rapids on Sunday. Once contenders riding high after three consecutive finals appearances and a strong start, Somerset now find themselves in dire straits, having lost five of their last six matches.
Following a mixed batting performance from Worcestershire, Sikandar Raza and Brett D’Oliveira powered the Rapids to a competitive total of 180 runs with an unbeaten 58-run partnership. Raza’s aggressive 46 off just 23 balls, complemented by D’Oliveira’s unbeaten 41, set a challenging target.
Somerset’s response started cautiously with Tom Banton and James Rew forming a solid foundation. However, the Rapids’ bowlers quickly swung momentum back their way. Usama Mir was the spearhead, claiming three key wickets for 34 runs and triggering a collapse, supported ably by Matthew Waite’s tight bowling performance.

Head Coach Jason Kerr expressed disappointment: “As a collective, we didn’t bowl well enough and failed to stick to our plans, allowing them too many runs. On the batting front, we lacked momentum and were never truly in the contest. Losing Jake Ball in the warm-up to a quad strain certainly didn’t help.”
Worcestershire’s openers, Kashif Ali and Isaac Mohammed, set an aggressive tone early on, but Mohammed’s dismissal for 34 brought Raza and D’Oliveira to the fore. Their partnership was pivotal, propelling the Rapids past the halfway mark and maintaining a healthy run rate.
The chase faltered after an early setback with the loss of Will Smeed. Despite a steady partnership between Banton and Rew, the Rapids’ bowling attack seized control mid-innings. Mir’s triple strike and Waite’s incisive spells dismantled Somerset’s batting lineup, propelling Worcestershire to victory and keeping their own knockout hopes alive.
With just four matches remaining, Somerset face an uphill battle to secure a quarter-final spot and extend their impressive run of finals appearances. The team will need to regroup quickly and find the form that has eluded them in recent matches.
