Somerset have significantly enhanced their prospects of securing their first-ever County Championship title by signing New Zealand international batsman Henry Nicholls for the final six matches of the season, according to Stuart James.
The 34-year-old left-hander is set to arrive in Taunton this week and will immediately join the squad for tomorrow’s County Ground clash against Essex. Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition.
“Henry is a batter of genuine quality and is an excellent addition to the squad,” Hurry commented. “He has competed and succeeded at the highest levels and brings a wealth of experience to our batting line-up.

“Beyond his skill as a player, his experience and deep understanding of the game will undoubtedly benefit our developing players. His previous involvement in English domestic cricket provides valuable insight, and we eagerly anticipate his contributions throughout the remainder of the campaign.”
Nicholls boasts an impressive track record, having featured in 60 Test matches for New Zealand, accumulating 3,358 runs at an average of 39.50, including a highest score of an unbeaten 200. Overall, he has played 141 First-Class matches, amassing over 9,000 runs at an average of 42.51.
In addition to his Test career, Nicholls has represented New Zealand in 92 One Day Internationals and 10 Twenty20 Internationals. He has also participated in the Big Bash League, playing for the Sydney Thunder.
Upon signing with Somerset, Nicholls expressed his excitement about the new challenge: “I’m looking forward to the challenge of helping Somerset win their first County Championship title. Having played in England before, I appreciate how much red ball cricket means to the club’s Members and supporters.
“As a cricketer, I always aim to test myself in different conditions against top-quality opponents around the world. This opportunity allows me to do just that while contributing to Somerset’s success. I’m eager to get started.”
