Three members of the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force, based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Okehampton during a training exercise.
The Royal Navy revealed the identities of the fallen personnel on Thursday evening. Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, 42, a Somerset native and seasoned pilot; Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher, 31, from Surrey and Britain’s sole serving female Royal Navy Commando; and Petty Officer Owen Green, 24, of Hampshire, died in the crash that occurred in Sourton in the early hours of Wednesday.
All three served within the Commando Helicopter Force, which comprises three squadrons stationed at Yeovilton. The Force paid tribute in a heartfelt Facebook post simply stating: “Three of Our Own.” The Royal Navy echoed this sentiment, honouring their unwavering dedication to serving the nation and the Navy.

A flood of condolences followed, with messages expressing deep sorrow and gratitude for the fallen’s commitment. One comment read, “Thank you for your service and commitment. Our sincere condolences to the families in this difficult time.” Another shared, “This breaks my heart. Rest in peace, beautiful people.”
Tributes from families painted personal portraits of these courageous individuals. Lieutenant Commander Gayson was remembered as a kind and devoted family man, deeply devoted both to his loved ones and his calling in the Royal Navy.
Lieutenant Fisher’s family described her as an extraordinary daughter, sister, and partner, full of life and determination. She was just days away from qualifying as a pilot when the accident occurred during her final assessment.
Petty Officer Green’s family recalled his caring nature and the joy he brought to those around him. They expressed deep pride in his achievement of fulfilling his dream to serve as a Junglie Aircrewman and emphasized the lasting love they hold for him.
Lieutenant Commander Gayson had been the Operational Conversion Flight Commander of 846 Naval Air Squadron since July 2025, with Lieutenant Fisher joining the same squadron that year after an impressive military career. Petty Officer Green served with 845 Naval Air Squadron, having joined the Navy in January 2022 following training at HMS Raleigh.
Colonel Will Penkman, Commanding Officer of the Commando Helicopter Force, expressed his grief: “Losing three cherished members of the CHF family is a heartbreaking tragedy. Their professionalism and the Junglie spirit defined them. They leave a gap that will be deeply felt, and my thoughts are with their families and friends who loved them dearly.”
