Somerset Soft Play Centre Near M5 Fights to Survive Amid Rising Costs and Quiet Summers

Jolly Jumpers Playzone, a beloved family-run soft play centre in Bridgwater, Somerset, is urgently seeking support as escalating operational costs threaten its future. The Welham family, who have managed the centre for over a decade, reveal that staff wages, utility bills, business rates, insurance, and essential maintenance expenses have surged dramatically.

Manager Emily Welham, 25, who started working at Jolly Jumpers when she was just 14, emphasizes the centre’s integral role in the community. “We’ve welcomed thousands of families over the years, witnessing precious moments like birthdays and first steps,” she shares. Despite a busy winter season, summer proves to be a difficult period with significantly fewer visitors.

“Many people assume we’re busiest during the summer holidays,” Emily explains, “but the reality is it’s a long six weeks, and on sunny days families often prefer the beach, parks, or countryside walks.” Contributing to the struggle is the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which tightens family budgets nationwide.

In response, Jolly Jumpers has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a target of £3,500 to cover essential costs and keep their doors open. So far, they have raised £445 from 23 donations. The fundraiser message underscores their commitment: “Every donation, big or small, directly supports maintaining a safe, warm, and welcoming space for children to play and be children.”

The team emphasizes that despite cutting costs and working longer hours, the financial pressures are overwhelming. “We’ve done everything we can because we believe in what Jolly Jumpers offers. But now, we need the community’s help to continue.”

Open seven days a week, Jolly Jumpers remains a cherished local venue and hopes that with community support, it will continue to be a place where families create lasting memories.
