Somerset Siblings Chase Commonwealth Games Judo Glory

Four years after narrowly missing out on a Commonwealth Games medal, Lele Nairne is set to make a triumphant return to the stage in Glasgow, this time accompanied by her younger brother Ethan. While many families celebrate a single member representing their country at a major competition, the Nairnes are proud to have two siblings competing side by side this summer.

Lele, 28, from Weston-super-Mare, finished just off the podium in Birmingham four years ago, narrowly losing out to Scotland’s Malin Wilson for the bronze. Now, with her brother making his Commonwealth Games debut and her coach by her side, she is determined to turn that near-miss into a moment to remember.

“Glasgow is going to be special,” Lele said. “Competing together with my brother makes it even more meaningful. The pressure last time was intense, but now it feels different. Not many siblings can say they’ve been to the Commonwealth Games together—mum and dad must be proud.”

The siblings are expected to compete on the same day, adding to the excitement. “Having him there cheering me on—and me cheering him—means a lot. I feel like I paved the way a bit, and it’s fantastic to see my teammates and brother all going.”

Lele’s journey has been notable. A late injury replacement in Birmingham, she nearly reached the podium. Since then, she has become a staple in British Judo, competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics and earning bronze at January’s Sofia European Open. Years of hard work have transformed her from an intense competitor to a relaxed and focused athlete, hungry for gold.

“I’m definitely ready for this one and a bit more chill about it,” she added. “I want to redeem myself and bring home gold. The Commonwealth Games are a wonderful experience—being part of the village, meeting athletes from different sports. It feels like a real blessing to be going back.”

With both siblings representing Team England, the Nairnes embody dedication and family strength on the international judo stage.
