Somerset Settles for Draw Against Nottinghamshire in High-Scoring Thrill

The pitch at Taunton proved to be the ultimate determining factor as Somerset and Nottinghamshire played out an intense, high-scoring draw on the final day of the Rothesay County Championship First Division match at Cooper Associates Ground.

James Rew led Somerset’s batting charge with a masterful 122 off 184 balls, including 13 fours and 2 sixes, while Tom Kohler-Cadmore secured his fourth century for Somerset with a fluent 104. Their partnership lifted the home side to a commanding declaration at 407-5, setting Nottinghamshire a challenging target of 417 runs in at least 60 overs.

Despite spirited bowling efforts from Jack Leach and Alfie Ogborne, who between them took three wickets, the true nature of the pitch, favorable weather, and resolute batting by Nottinghamshire’s top order thwarted Somerset’s attempt to force a win.

Nottinghamshire’s Ben Slater top-scored with 60 and, together with Haseeb Hameed, forged a 90-run opening partnership. Jack Haynes and Freddie McCann contributed with steady resistance as Nottinghamshire reached 140-3 in their second innings. The captains agreed to a draw at 5.17 pm with 15 overs remaining, splitting 13 points each.

Somerset captain Craig Overton reflected, “Overall, I’m very pleased with our performance. We started our innings in challenging conditions, but Tom Abell and James Rew stabilized us, setting a strong platform with over 350 runs. Alfie Ogborne’s outstanding spell brought us back into the contest after Nottinghamshire’s solid first innings.

“We tried to push for a result by aggressively pursuing wickets overnight and into the final day. However, the pitch remained firm and scoring was brisk, making it tough to take the remaining wickets. Surrounding the bat was the best strategy, but credit to Nottinghamshire—they showed grit and put us under pressure.”

Nottinghamshire batter Ben Slater added, “We’re happy to share points after being under pressure on day three. Saving the game shows how far we’ve progressed. It was important to keep calm, play our natural game, and apply pressure back on the bowlers. While we’re still building towards our best form, this result is a positive step forward.”
