Somerset Secure Vitality Blast Quarter-Finals Early with Dominant Win Over Essex

Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s blistering 90-run innings off just 39 deliveries propelled Somerset into the Vitality Blast quarter-finals with three games to spare, as they crushed Essex by 95 runs at Taunton.

Wearing sunglasses to battle the bright sunshine—a factor that may have contributed to Essex’s sluggish fielding and multiple dropped catches—Kohler-Cadmore delivered a spectacular performance, smashing seven sixes and eight fours. His patient yet aggressive approach laid the foundation for Somerset’s formidable total of 225 for six. Every member of Somerset’s top seven scored in double figures, showcasing a balanced and powerful batting display. Mohammad Amir was the only Essex bowler who managed to contain the onslaught, finishing with figures of 4-0-22-3.

Somerset’s fast bowler Riley Meredith made an immediate impact early in Essex’s innings, clean bowling Michael Pepper with a precise yorker that impressively snapped the leg stump in two. Essex’s chase quickly unraveled as they slipped to 48 for five within the first six overs, continuing their disappointing season with just one win out of ten matches.

Matt Henry was outstanding with the ball, claiming four wickets for 21 runs. He dismissed Amir with his final delivery, and Essex were bowled out for 130 in just 14.1 overs, marking a comprehensive victory for Somerset.

The win solidified Somerset’s hold at the top of the South Group, moving 12 points clear of nearest challengers Surrey and becoming the first team to book their place in the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, Essex remain rooted to the bottom of the table, already eliminated from contention.
