Somerset Secure Vitality Blast Quarter-Final Spot with Dominant Win Over Worcestershire

Will Smeed delivered a blistering half-century as Somerset secured a commanding 78-run victory against Worcestershire Rapids at Taunton, booking their place in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals.

The in-form opener struck 52 runs off just 31 balls, powering a rapid 75-run partnership with Thomas Rew. Somerset posted a challenging total of 194-7 on a worn pitch at the Cooper Associates Ground. Australian fast bowler Riley Meredith shone with figures of 3-17, supported by former England spinner Jack Leach, who took 3-20 to dismantle Worcestershire’s chase. Despite a resilient 39 from Gareth Roderick, the Rapids were bowled out for 116 in 16 overs.

This win marked Somerset’s fifth victory in six matches, elevating them above Gloucestershire on net run rate to finish second in the Central and West Group, behind only Northamptonshire. Worcestershire, meanwhile, fell short of the quarter-final qualification.

Smeed and Rew launched a furious assault during the powerplay, unsettling Worcestershire’s bowling. Smeed’s aggressive strokeplay included a massive six over mid-wicket off Beyers Swanepoel, while Rew expertly cleared the leg side boundary twice in one over. Rew’s 42 from 19 balls was ended when he miscued a slower delivery from Matthew Waite.

Leg-spin from Usama Mir provided a crucial slowdown, claiming the wickets of Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Lewis Goldsworthy while restricting run flow in the middle overs. Smeed reached his half-century in 29 balls with two sixes and six boundaries before being caught at extra cover, and James Rew contributed an important 28 runs before being trapped lbw.

Somerset captain Lewis Gregory sparked a momentum shift with a quickfire 28 off 15 balls before falling to Moen Ali. Waite’s three-wicket haul, including the dismissal of Daniel Sams, sealed Somerset’s commanding total.

Worcestershire’s chase struggled from the outset; Henry Cullen and Isaac Mohammed’s opening partnership of 35 was broken by early wickets to Jake Ball and Meredith. The middle order faltered under pressure, with wickets tumbling regularly as Somerset’s disciplined bowling took firm control.

Leach’s spin was instrumental, knocking over wickets and breaking crucial partnerships, while the Yorkers applied tight pressure. When Leach trapped Roderick in the fourteenth over, Worcestershire’s hopes effectively ended.

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr praised his side’s resilience after a slow start to the campaign: “At the halfway point, we had only two wins and qualification seemed unlikely. To win four straight and reach the knockouts is an incredible achievement. The players deserve huge credit. Facing Yorkshire away will be a tough challenge, but we are confident and ready. Our form is improving, key players are firing, and there’s great belief in the team. I doubt many will relish facing Somerset at the moment.”

With confidence running high, Somerset now prepare to defend their title against Yorkshire at Headingley in the quarter-finals.
