Somerset have taken a significant step towards the Vitality Blast quarter-finals with an emphatic 27-run win against Derbyshire Falcons at the OurCoop County Ground in Derby.
The highlight of the match was Will Smeed’s brilliant innings of 89 runs off just 51 balls, featuring six towering sixes that powered Somerset to a formidable total of 214 for 6. Derbyshire’s Martin Andersson was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets for 33 runs in a disciplined effort.
Derbyshire’s chase was ignited by Aneurin Donald, who blasted a rapid 65 from 27 balls, including five sixes in his fiery assault. However, Craig Overton’s crucial wicket of Donald sparked a collapse as Somerset’s bowlers applied consistent pressure. Daniel Sams capped off a strong bowling performance with figures of 3 for 29, helping to restrict Derbyshire to 187 for 7.

Somerset’s victory came at a critical time. With Northamptonshire’s win over Glamorgan and Worcestershire set to face Gloucestershire, Somerset know that winning their final two matches will almost certainly secure their passage to the quarter-finals.
The contest between Somerset and Derbyshire was only their second T20 encounter. Somerset’s innings saw powerplay dominance from Smeed and Thomas Rew, who combined for 61 runs before two quick wickets slowed momentum. Thomas Rew was dismissed for 39 from 22 balls by Andersson’s deceptive slower ball, while his brother James followed soon after.
At 88 for 2 after 10 overs, Somerset regained control thanks to Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who blasted consecutive sixes off Jack Morley in the 12th over. Smeed’s half-century, reached off 33 deliveries, was highlighted by a massive six over wide long-on. He continued to dominate, launching Moqim and Potts for sixes in the 16th over before being caught out attempting another big shot in the 17th.
Despite Andersson claiming two late wickets, Craig Overton provided a strong finish by striking the last two deliveries for fours, setting a challenging target.
The Falcons’ chase was initially powered by Donald’s explosive hitting until Overton caught him at deep midwicket off the final ball of the powerplay, a pivotal moment that shifted Somerset’s momentum. Consistent bowling pressure saw wickets of Sams and Ball fall to crucial catches by Harry Came and Matthew Montgomery.
With the required run rate soaring beyond 15 runs per over, Derbyshire’s hopes faded as Sams yorked Wayne Madsen in the 18th over, sealing Somerset’s well-earned victory and putting them in an excellent position to advance in the tournament.
