Tom Abell’s composed half-century played a crucial role as Somerset battled to secure a draw during their Rothesay County Championship encounter at Trent Bridge.
Despite a strong start from Nottinghamshire, who posted a formidable first innings total of 544 runs — including a commanding 208 from Haseeb Hameed — Somerset managed to hold their ground. Late wickets fell early on the final day, with former Nottinghamshire bowler Jake Ball returning to claim three wickets for 76 runs.
Starting the match third in the standings, Somerset found themselves 106 runs behind after Nottinghamshire’s imposing total. However, Abell’s steady batting was backed by Tom Banton’s unbeaten 43, as they combined for an 87-run partnership that shifted the momentum. Somerset reached 200 for five, taking a 94-run lead, before the players controversially agreed to a draw shortly after 4:50 pm.

The result leaves Surrey maintaining a nine-point lead over Nottinghamshire at the top of Division One after their win at Durham earlier this week. Surrey remains on course to clinch a fourth consecutive County Championship title but still face a crucial fixture against Nottinghamshire at The Kia Oval next month.
While the draw was the most likely outcome following the slow pace of play during the first three days, Somerset faced moments of real danger. Leg-spinner Calvin Harrison’s three wickets for 57 runs kept Nottinghamshire in contention until the final moments.
