Somerset Secure Draw Against Warwickshire Thanks to Rew and Overton Centuries

Craig Overton delivered his third Rothesay County Championship century of the season as Somerset and Warwickshire battled to a hard-fought draw at the Cooper Associates Ground in Taunton.

Stepping up as captain in the absence of the injured Lewis Gregory, Overton advanced from an overnight 89 not out to a commanding 111. Alongside teenage sensation Tom Rew, who notched an impressive 149, they forged a crucial seventh-wicket partnership worth 233 runs. Their efforts propelled Somerset to a second innings total of 435, establishing a lead of 313.

Rew’s innings was momentarily halted by left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who recorded five wickets for 100 runs in 46.5 overs. Warwickshire’s response was cautious; after slipping early to 34-2, the visitors ended the final day at 98-2 with Rob Yates unbeaten on 51 and Sam Hain not out on 23, effectively abandoning any chance of chasing the target.

Somerset’s recovery on day three was remarkable, having found themselves in dire straits at just four wickets down and a slender 26-run lead in their second innings. When play resumed under clear skies, the batting pair of Rew and Overton continued their steady domination. Their partnership passed 200 runs from 357 balls, demonstrating composure and skill in equal measure.

Overton reached his century with a sublime straight drive off Ethan Bamber, marking his 13th boundary. The partnership finally ended at 381 when Overton was dismissed lbw to a turning delivery from Rob Yates. Soon after, Rew fell caught behind off Beau Webster, ending a marathon innings that featured 19 boundaries.

With a lead of 259, Somerset’s lower order contributed a vital 46 runs through Jack Leach and Alfie Ogborne. Leach, celebrating his 35th birthday, remained unbeaten on 25, while Ogborne was dismissed just before lunch by Suthar’s last ball in the session. The innings concluded when last man Jake Ball attempted a big hit but was caught out, finishing Somerset’s innings.

Warwickshire’s hopes of a successful chase faded quickly as Leach took two wickets early in the innings, removing Zen Malik and Dan Mousley. Yates and Hain then adopted a cautious approach against Somerset’s spinners Leach and Archie Vaughan, scoring 75 runs for two wickets by tea.

The final day’s play was dominated by a slow pitch favoring bowlers, and Somerset struggled to make further breakthroughs. Yates compiled a patient 51 from 120 balls, but as rain and an approaching thunderstorm disrupted play, the match was called off at 4:45 pm, resulting in a draw.
