Craig Overton delivered a masterclass captain’s performance to steer Somerset to a commanding 10-wicket victory against Essex in the County Championship, wrapping up the match with more than four sessions to spare.
Filling in as captain for the injured Lewis Gregory, Overton excelled with bat, ball, and in the field. He top-scored with his second career century, claimed four crucial wickets, took a sharp catch, and smartly won the toss to secure first use of a green-tinged pitch.
The 32-year-old former England seamer struck early in the third day, dismantling Essex’s promising 96-run partnership by quickly removing set batsmen Matt Critchley and Paul Walter. Trailing by 199 runs on the first innings, Essex struggled to regain footing.

Chasing a modest target of 47, Somerset sealed the win rapidly—just 15 minutes and 5.4 overs—powered by a flurry of boundaries. Injury substitute Archie Vaughan made a statement after a tough start to the season, smashing 41 runs off 25 balls, including 19 off a single over from Sam Cook and two sixes over mid-wicket off Simon Harmer.
Somerset faced several injury setbacks, with Lewis Goldsworthy sidelined after a hamstring tweak and Tom Kohler-Cadmore ruled out early due to a bruised thumb. Will Smeed was drafted from a second-team fixture to cover, while Vaughan became the 13th player mobilized for the team this match.
Vaughan’s impact was immediate, taking a stunning catch at second slip to dismiss Critchley early in the morning. Overton then maintained pressure, removing Walter caught and bowled, and later contributing to Michael Pepper’s wicket with a sharp slip catch.
Despite enduring back spasms, Wiaan Mulder showed courage but ultimately fell attempting a risky hook shot against Migael Pretorius. Overton’s sole mistake was a dropped catch off Shane Snater, the only slight blemish in an otherwise flawless performance.
Essex’s resistance softened as Pretorius and Shaw picked late wickets, with Simon Harmer’s stubborn innings ending lbw and Shane Snater dismissed at midwicket. Pretorius finished with figures of 3-64, but Somerset’s dominance was clear throughout.
This comprehensive victory lifts Somerset to the top of the County Championship table, highlighting their strong early form and the leadership qualities of Craig Overton.
