Somerset has announced the signing of Australian international all-rounder Daniel Sams to strengthen their squad for the 2026 Vitality T20 Blast season. The 33-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having played 206 T20 matches worldwide where he has taken 250 wickets at an impressive average of 24.63, including a best bowling figure of 5 for 30. With the bat, Sams has accumulated over 2,170 runs at a strike rate of 152.66 and a top score of 98 not out.
Sams will be available throughout the entire 2026 tournament, marking his return to English county cricket after stints with Essex and Nottinghamshire in recent years. Reflecting on his new opportunity, Sams said, “I’m thrilled to be joining Somerset and eager to help defend the title. Having competed against them, I know what a formidable T20 side they are. I look forward to contributing to the team’s success in 2026.”
Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition: “Daniel’s international pedigree and proven impact in English conditions make him a significant addition to our squad. His combination of skillful bowling and aggressive batting offers us valuable depth and versatility.”

Nicknamed ‘The Karate Kid,’ Sams began his professional career with Canterbury in New Zealand in 2017 before making his T20 debut for the Sydney Sixers. He earned his international T20 cap for Australia in December 2020, playing his last match against England in October 2022.
Sams joins fellow Australian pacer Riley Meredith in Somerset’s lineup. Meredith was instrumental in Somerset’s 2024 final appearance, taking 14 wickets at an average of 22.78. In 2025, he led the wicket tally with 28 from 14 matches at an average of 16.32, although he missed Finals Day due to a recall for Australian state duties. Like Sams, Meredith will be available throughout the 2026 Blast competition, promising a potent Australian duo to spearhead Somerset’s bowling attack.
